Behind the Donald’s Attitude

During the past few days the GOP presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has been explaining why all the sacrifices he has made – creating thousands of jobs(?) – is on a par with that of Khizr and Ghazala Khan. Their son, Army Capt. Humayun Khan, was killed by a suicide car bomb in 2004. He was 27. As a result, Trump’s stand on the issue has drawn almost universal condemnation, even from leaders of his own party, although none have actually withdrawn their support. Apparently he has not learned a fundamental rule of self-preservation: When you have dug yourself into a hole, stop digging. This is not the first time that Trump has found himself at odds with the general sentiment; as a result, I have been inspired to look for an explanation for his apparent obliviousness to other people’s concerns and feelings. And I think I have found one. According to the American Psychological Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , 4th Edition, Text Revisio...

Why Is Donald Trump Looking So Good?

Why is Donald Trump doing so well in the current presidential polling? In spite of being loud-mouthed, brash and ridiculous, as of July 21, 2015 he was the leading contender among Republican voters by an average of 18% vs. 13% for the second place contender: Jeb Bush. A bit of background is in order. The Republican Party has been running on certain dislikes, tacitly in some cases, for many years. Here are a few: President Obama - The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president. (Mitch McConnell – October 23, 2010). Affordable Health Care - While repeal and replace plans such as this (ACA) are our ultimate goal, it will require a Republican White House and Congress to become law. In the meantime, Republicans should continue to work to repeal parts of the health care law at every available opportunity. (Orrin Hatch – July 22, 2015). The Poor – Evidenced by supporting Voter ID acts. Mexicans – No road to citizenship...

Who Shut Down the United States?

As I write this, the shutdown blame game continues in Washington. According to the GOP, the Democrats refuse to compromise. The argument is, “We need more time to analyze this 2,500-page train wreck.” My question is: Given that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was passed three years ago, how much time do you need? The Republican answer: Eternity. If that’s true, you must have stupid analysts. Another GOP argument is that the individual purchase requirement in the law is unconstitutional. The law was duly passed by the Congress, signed by the President, and upheld by the Supreme Court. Unconstitutional? I think not. Next argument: The President has broken the law by postponing the health care employer mandate. October 1 st was specified in the law – he is overstepping his power by deferring the requirement. But wait – the implementation of all laws is prescribed by the agencies charged with enforcing them. Federal agencies have almost unlimited powers concerning the rules c...
